To all the new vegetarians out there

When I start out as a vegetarian I was clueless. There are things your body needs that are in meat but don't worry there are other ways of getting them.

1. Now that you don't eat meat anymore you need protein, which is no problem. Protein is found in a lot of things like eggs, milk, peanuts, cheese, beans, tofu, and many more.
2. You need some fat. There are fats that are good for you like olive oil.
3. You need to know where you draw the line. Like will you eat eggs and drink milk?, will you eat chicken broth?, Rennet?, Gelatin?, Animal fat?, Fish?
4. Instead of eating a California roll eat a cucumber roll. Simply things like that.
5. Take a multivitamin. It doesn't hurt.
6.Read about vegetarianism.
7. If you don't feel you have the strength you had when you ate meat, or you often find your self tired fast maybe vegetarianism is not right for you.
8. Good luck :)

The Kind Diet

Last year when I became a vegetarian I knew I had to do some research, so I would stay healthy as a vegetarian. So my mom and I went to Barnes and Noble and bought The Kind Diet by: Alicia Silverstone. It was amazing all of the things I learned. The book talks about what they do to the animal, why its wrong, and it has amazing recipes in the back of the book.

Make sure you get enough

A vegetarian diet along with exercise can lower blood cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, lessen risk of obesity, lessen risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer. As long as you get all the nutrition you need.

There are many ways to get protein like cow’s milk, soy milk, cheese, beans, breads, cereal, nuts, tofu, tempeh, eggs and many more. Did you know most americans actually get to much protein.

So what it Rennet?

Today I figured out that most cheeses have rennet in them. Rennet is an extract from the fourth stomach of a young cow. The calf uses the rennet to digest its mothers milk. Most people don't list rennet as it ingredient. Several plants produce natural rennet compounds. But don't worry cheeses with alternatives to rennet are available. Some cheeses don't need rennet as an ingredient cheeses like cottage cheese, ricotta, and some varieties of mozzarella.

Did you know?

Did you know that marshmallows are not actually vegetarian. One of the ingredients in marshmallows is Gelatin. Gelatin is an odorless, tasteless and colorless thickening agent. It is made by boiling the hides and bones of cows and pigs to release their collagen, which is boiled some more, filtered, dried and ground into a powder. But it is so processed the government does not consider it a meat product. Gelatin is also found in gummy bears.

My story

Hi,
My name is Brooke, I am 13 and I am a teen vegetarian. I have been a vegetarian for over a year now. I am the only one in my whole family who is a vegetarian. A lot of people ask me why i am a vegetarian. My answer always is i don't think killing an animal for my taste buds is a good enough reason. i created this blog because i know how hard it was for me.
